Maracha District residents have been urged to embrace government programs to improve their income status.  In his remarks as guest of honor during the District Independence Day Celebrations hosted by Obiba Sub-county, Hajji Ramathan Walugembe, Maracha Resident District Commissioner, said some people are opposing government programs yet they are living in abject poverty. Walugembe said with free primary and secondary education there should be more children enrolled in school. 

Hon. Driwaru Jennifer, Maracha District Woman Member of Parliament, said independence can only be fully realized through economic empowerment of the local communities. Hon. Driwaru observed that government livelihood programs are instigating an upsurge in domestic violence due to lack of openness in the management of money at household level.

Hon. Driwaru observed that women in Maracha District in most times solely bear the responsibility of running homes. She called upon men to join their wives in managing family affairs.

Hon. Obitre Stephen, Maracha District Chairperson, said government is committed to prosperous communities through socio-economic programs. He said if Maracha District residents utilize the livelihood funds they will be saved from borrowing high interest loans from financial institutions.

Hon. Obitre said leaders should avoid squabbles and instead work together to develop the District.  He said the fight against corruption should not be used to blackmail leaders.

The theme for Uganda's 62nd Independence Day was "Independence Day: A Recommitment to Secure and Fortify Our Destiny".
